‘Tis the Season…To Eat Healthily

The Holidays are notorious for being a period of overindulgence, indigestion, and weight gain, so let’s do something new this year by bringing a welcome change to one’s feasting habits

Christmas and the New Year in the Philippines are characterized by festive tables and decadent dishes whose recipes have been handed down from one generation to the next. While all this is sumptuous and delectable, it’s also the reason why hospital emergency rooms get filled with patients complaining of indigestion and other gastrointestinal issues and why there is an uptick among those suffering from hypertension and cardiovascular illnesses.

Think about it: in these health conscious times, shouldn’t we have already wised up? That said, we present a number of tips for healthy eating throughout the Yuletide Season:

  • Get on Board with Meatless Mondays   With dishes like lechon, morcon, baked ham, and roast beef, chicken, or turkey, it is easy for many people to get carnivorous during the Holidays. As an antidote to this excess of animal protein, go vegetarian at least once a week as a way of cleaning out your system. Enjoy salads and smoothies, braised tofu, or even indulge in non-dairy desserts; they are just as tasty and also better for you.
  • Fiber Up           Excess carbohydrates abound during the Season thanks to gifts of cakes and rich desserts. To counteract this, increase your fiber intake. Replace white rice with brown or adlai or skip your morning champorado in favor of granola or muesli.
  • Rethink That Gift          Speaking of sweet gifts, better think twice before sending another box of ensaimadas or another tin of leche flan to family and friends. Sending gifts of fresh fruit may be pricier, but their health benefits cannot be disputed – and will be better for the recipient in the long run.
  • Stay Hydrated  Liquid libations may be on the Holiday spread, but they will wreak havoc on your waistline if you aren’t careful. Our suggestion? Skip the alcohol and be sure to drink at least two liters of water a day for great skin and for general detoxing. Your liver will thank you for it.

While we’re on the subject of eating and drinking healthier for the Holidays, we also suggest that you keep yourself from overeating thanks to stress and other worries by booking a 40-minute session in the Vital Dome. More than just another detox device, the Far Infrared-generating Dome also helps you shed excess poundage in the healthiest manner possible.
