Flourish, Don’t Languish

Yes, the constant string of quarantines is getting us down, but don’t let it count you out in terms of both physical and mental health.

The word “languish” has become the way by which people are describing their current state: a weary, restless feeling of being unable to perk yourself up and move forward. It is, according to physicians and psychologists alike, caused by constant lockdowns, a seemingly unending stream of bad news on television or on social media, and the inability to engage in close contact with family and friends. You feel unmotivated to do anything and, despite the encouraging quotations posted in your Facebook feed.

It isn’t just mental or emotional, by the way. “Languishing” means feeling physically unable to do as much as you can. It feels like you lack energy, your joints ache even if you haven’t been moving or exercising strenuously, you suffer from migraines, and even eight hours of sleep is not as refreshing as it used to be.

We know how hard it is to try and fight off the feeling, but the crucial thing at this point is to flourish – survive and thrive despite the circumstances – and regain some semblance of normalcy. To that end, we recommend the following tips:

Unplug

Give yourself at least half an hour to an hour and a half away from your gadgets. Consider it quiet time: read a book, brew yourself a cup of coffee or tea, play with your kids or a pet, or just spend some time thinking or meditating alone.

Unwind

Working from home means that you tend to lose track of time and you may find yourself working till late in the night. Instead of burning the midnight oil – and burning yourself out – it’s best to set yourself a time to log off from work.

Move

Leading a sedentary lifestyle during lockdown can, ironically, sap your energy and keep you from getting quality sleep. Give yourself exercise time of at least thirty minutes to an hour every day. This healthy jolt of adrenalin will not only wake up your mind and body, but will help you feel tired enough to sleep soundly at night.

Nourish

Skip the salty and sugary snacks – they will do your health no favors. Eat small sensible meals that are balanced nutritionally.

Hydrate

It isn’t helping that the weather is also too hot for comfort. Stay hydrated by drinking at least two liters of water or other healthful liquids. Steer clear of too much alcohol or caffeine, though, as these have a diuretic effect that can leave you feeling much drier.

Detox

Make a Vital Dome session part of your lockdown lifestyle. A good 40 minute session enables your body to sweat out harmful toxins, boosts your immunity, and goes a long way to relaxing and refreshing your mind and body. Plus, it helps rejuvenate your systems through accelerated cellular regeneration.
